Aeronautical Engineering

Aeronautical Engineering is one of the frontier branches of engineering that deals with the study of principles and technology to design, manufacture and maintain sophisticated products such as aircrafts, missiles and space satellites. This branch of science also makes an expert in the evolution and research of commercial and military aircraft, missiles, spaceships etc. High vigilance and mathematical precision happen to be the two necessary words for this academic discipline.

The sub-disciplines in aeronautical engineering includes the fields like structural design, navigational guidance and control systems, instrumentation and communication or production techniques or it can be in a specific product such as military aircrafts, passenger planes, helicopters, rockets, satellites etc. Professionals qualified in aeronautical engineering may find work in areas like design, development, and maintenance as well as in the managerial and teaching posts in colleges. The demand for aeronautical engineering graduates in airlines, aircraft manufacturing units, air turbine production plants is generally high.

Individuals aspiring for career in aeronautical engineering should be highly talented, self-motivated, good team players, innovative and lateral thinkers. They should also be good in technical and analytical thinking.

Courses & Eligibility

In India various technological universities including the IITs offer programs in aeronautical engineering both at the undergraduate as well as post-graduate level. The basic eligibility criteria for BE / B.Tech courses is intermediate (with Physics, Chemistry and Maths) or equivalent examination with a fairly high percentage of aggregate marks. One needs to pass the qualifying exam i.e. IIT JEE for admission into engineering programs of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

For M.Tech program in aeronautical engineering one should have completed degree in (BE/BTech) course in the same discipline.

Job Prospects
Employment opportunities are available with the aircraft-manufacturing units. In the Indian context, the defense service and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) happen to be the two major employment providers. Moreover, the aeronautical engineers often get employment in companies such as Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd, Defense Research and Development Laboratories, National Aeronautical Lab, Aeronautical Development Establishment, Civil Aviation Department and other places.
