IIT JEE 2012 Results Out – Faridabad boy tops

The results of the Joint Entrance Examination for the world renowned Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-JEE) 2012 were declared on Friday.

The results of the exam, which was held on 8 April, were announced on the official JEE website on Friday at 6 AM in morning.

"Arpit Agrawal from Faridabad's Modern Vidya Niketan school, who appeared in the exams from IIT Delhi zone, has topped the competition this year," GB Reddy, JEE chairman, told reporters here.

Bijoy Singh Kochar from Chandigarh was the second on the list of toppers and Nishant N Kaushik from Bhilai in Madhya Pradesh secured the third rank.

A total of 4, 79,651 students appeared for the IIT JEE-2012 which was held at 1,067 centers across the country for admission to 9,647 undergraduate seats in the 17 IITs.

"Of the total candidates, 24,112 have secured ranks in different categories and 19,426 have been shortlisted for counseling for admission to 9,647 seats in the IITs and other colleges," Reddy said.

"The counseling website will be open to the shortlisted candidates from today (Friday) and the students are expected to fill up their choice of courses up to 5 pm till June 10," Reddy said.

For the first time this year, the scanned images of the answer sheet were shown to the candidates between May 5 and May 10 to help them submit online revision requests.

This year, of the total 1, 50,431 girls who appeared in IIT JEE, 2,886 have secured ranks and the first 1,908 have been shortlisted for counseling.

Results doesn't matter to some
Even though lakhs of IIT aspirants were waiting for the result; JEE scores for entry into the country's premier institutes do not matter much to some students, as they have already got offer letters and scholarships from universities abroad.

Siddharth Chowdhury, a student of R B Junior Science College, Mulund, who got a scholarship from Purdue University, United States, has not even checked his IIT JEE score that is available online. "I applied at several institutes abroad and have got offer letters from 7 universities. But since I got a good scholarship from Purdue, I will take up its offer," he said. He will pursue his computer science engineering from the university. "I also plan to do a double major in electrical engineering. However, I am yet to take a final call," said Chowdhury.

Another student, Tanvi Chheda, who has a scholarship for pursuing her higher studies, will head to Cornell University. "I had an offer from Cambridge too, but I wish to do my engineering in earth science from Cornell. I have scored 255 marks in IIT JEE, but it does not matter now," she said.

Aditya Ramakrishnan, who got a call from MIT, did not even appear for the IIT-JEE. "I was confident about admission abroad." Pravin Tyagi, from a coaching institute, claimed that he has been getting requests from several parents at the beginning of the academic session for studies in universities abroad. "IITs are no longer the only coveted institutes for students and parents," he said.

This year, for the first time, IITs announced scores of students online before the results were announced.

The 15 IITs are IIT-Bhubaneshwar, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Gandhinagar, IIT-Guwahati, IIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Indore, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Madras, IIT-Mandi, IIT-Patna, IIT-Rajasthan, IIT-Roorkee, IIT-Ropar.

Other  institutes that are taking students on the basis of JEE results are Institute of Technology at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi and Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad along with Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Rae Bareli, Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Indian Maritime University (TS Chanakya, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai campus, Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Kolkata, National Maritime Academy, Chennai, Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam).
