Genetic Engineering

In simple terms, we can define genetic engineering as a laboratory technique used by scientists to change the DNA (Deoxy ribo Nucleic Acid) of living organisms. Q. Congratulations. Which institution are you opting for?
A. Computer Science branch at IIT-Mumbai because I’m interested in things like Logic and programming, and also because I’ll get a good recommendation for further studies from there. Another factor is that IIT-Mumbai Computer Science degree has a very good value in the market.

Q. So you plan to go for further studies after your engineering?
A. Yes, I plan to do my MS and PhD and get into research.

Prsshant V, 5th Rank – IIT-JEE, 2009

CHENNAI boy V Prashant started preparing for IIT-JEE when he was in Class 9. Ironically, he believes that students take the exam too seriously! The IIT Madras student shares that he grew up idolizing former President APJ Kalam and eventually plans to get into research. Q. How did you prepare for IIT-JEE? When did you start?
A. I began seriously preparing for the exam in Class 11, but I began attending classes at FIIT-JEE in Class 9 and 10.  At that stage, I did not take it too seriously. I would attend the classes, which were conducted once or twice a week. But in Class 11 and 12, I joined SMART, a local coaching centre. I would attend classes two to three times in a week on weekdays. I would also attend a Sunday batch at FIIT-JEE.

Mining Engineering

Course Outlook
The course of B.Tech in Marine Engineering is of four years duration. B.Tech in Computer Engineering

    Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.)

    The Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) is an undergraduate academic course designed to fulfill the academic component of professional accreditation bodies, to be followed by a period of practical training prior to the professional examination and registration. A bachelor's degree or diploma in architecture is needed to become a qualified architect.

    The degree is awarded for a course of study, which lasts up to five years. In some cases, a B.Arch can only be undertaken after having undertaken a three-year generalist architectural degree, in which case, it may be as short as two years. Some architecture institutes using this bi-partite structure have re-badged their B.Arch. programs as M.Arch. degrees.

     Bachelor of Architecture in India
    The basic eligibility criteria for undertaking B.Arch. in India is 10+2 (senior secondary Class XII) or equivalent referred to as the qualifying examination from a recognized Board/University with a minimum of 50% marks in Science subjects (Mathematics, Chemistry & Physics). Besides this, the candidate must qualify an entrance examination.

    Entrance Exams: Admission to first year of Five years full time undergraduate course in Architecture (Bachelor of Architecture) in different colleges of India is through National, State level and University entrance examinations.

    The CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) conducts a national level entrance examination- All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) on an All India basis for selection to undergraduate courses in B. Architecture and B. Planning in government and private colleges. The test consists of Mathematics, an Aptitude Test and a Drawing test. The National Aptitude test in Architecture (NATA), the online test with drawing exam is organized by the National Institute of Advanced Studies and Architecture in close association with the Council of Architecture (COA). NATA scores are used by admissions authorities of several unaided & Government aided schools / colleges of Architecture, to ensure common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants. NATA tests aesthetic sensitivity, critical thinking, perception, observation and architectural awareness.

    Selection to architecture courses at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT's) is through the national level Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Private institutes conduct their own entrance exams. Various Universities and states also conduct separate entrance exams for admission to their architecture and engineering colleges.

    Duration & Course Content: The B.Arch. degree programme is of 5 years duration and includes a period of practical experience. The apprenticeship (generally for one semester) has to be done under a practicing architect. The B. Arch degree develops the theoretical foundations and gives some practical insight on which a student later hones proficiency and functional accuracy.

    Course content of B.Arch. programmes includes architectural design (drawing and painting), acoustics, surveying and levelling, estimating and costing, construction methods, materials management, history of architecture, draftsman ship, environmental planning, applied mechanics, structural designing, computer applications etc. Some colleges teach architecture-related software packages such as AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max.

    Apart from the degree course in B.Arch, Diploma in architecture is also available in some colleges as either full time or part time. It generally takes seven years to complete the part-time diploma courses.

    After completing B.Arch, the candidate if he wishes can opt for post graduation i.e Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) that is of 2 to 3 semester duration. At the postgraduate level one can specialise in domains like construction management, town planning, interior design, naval architecture, landscape designing, building engineering and management etc.

    Doctoral programmes (Ph.D) can be undertaken after M.Arch. or with a B.Arch. plus five years experience in professional practice or research or teaching.

    Interpersonal Skills: A successful architect requires special qualifications like designing talent, business sense, social awareness and legal knowledge. They must have superior communication and drawing skills, keen observation, vivid imagination, creativity, ideas and the ability to visualise. Other qualities include leadership, managerial ability, resourcefulness and capability to work as a team. They must also possess good understanding of the various aspects of building technology to be able to design for varying needs under different conditions. Computer literacy also is needed for writing specifications, two- and three-dimensional drafting, and financial management. Knowledge of CADD is essential.

    Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE)

    The Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (famously known as IIT-JEE or just JEE) is an annual engineering entrance examination in India. A total of fifteen colleges accept JEE as a sole criterion for admission to their undergraduate courses. The fifteen colleges include the seven old and eight new (2009) Indian Institutes of Technology, IT-BHU Varanasi, and ISMU Dhanbad.

    Starting in 2007, newly established institutes such as Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) at Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal & Thiruvananthapuram, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Indian Institute of Maritime Studies, Mumbai and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT), Raebarely Uttar Pradesh are also admitting students through the JEE (Extended Merit List). For 2010, IIST has announced its own entrance exam.

    Joint Entrance Examination is conducted by the several IITs by a policy of rotation. It is one of the most competitive engineering entrance exams in the world with a success rate of around 1 in 45. Candidates who qualify in the IIT-JEE can apply for admission to the B.Arch. (Bachelor of Architecture), B.Des. (Bachelor of Design), B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology), Dual Degree (Integrated Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology) and Integrated MSc (Master of Sciences) courses in the various institutes. Getting admission into an IIT is often considered as the pinnacle of success for a student of the sciences, and the IITs/IT-BHU/ISM attract most of the brightest minds of the nation.

    History
    The JEE has evolved significantly from its initial pattern around 45 years back. Earlier, there were 4 subjects in JEE, the English language paper being the extra subject. During the time from 2000 to 2005, the JEE also had a screening test in addition to the JEE main examination in order to reduce the load on the JEE main examination by selecting only about 20,000 top candidates in screening. In 1997, the JEE was conducted twice after the question paper was leaked in some places.

    In September 2005, an analysis group comprised of directors of all the IITs announced major changes in JEE, implemented from 2006 onwards. The new test consists of a single objective paper, replacing the earlier two-test system. The candidates belonging to the general category must secure a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in the qualifying examination of the XIIth standard organized by the different educational boards of India. Candidates from Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Physically Disabled (PD) categories must require a minimum of 55% in aggregate in the Qualifying Examination.

    In 2008, the director and the dean of IIT Madras called for transforming JEE, saying that the coaching institutes were "enabling many among the less-than-best students to crack the test and keeping girls from qualifying." They expressed concern that the present system did not allow for the 12 years of schooling to have a bearing on selections into IITs

    Every year IIT-JEE is conducted by any one of the old IITs in round robin fashion. In 2009, it was organized by IIT-Guwahati. The IIT-JEE 2010, is scheduled on April 11, 2010 and will be conducted by IIT Madras. The Result of the same is scheduled tentatively on May 26, 2010. This year IIT-M has introduced several mode application processes through online feature to promote online application process.

    According to the data provided by the organizing committee of IIT-JEE, the children of medical professionals had the highest rate of success in the IIT-JEE (for the years 2006, 2007 and 2008). They were followed by the children of engineering professionals. The maximum number of students applying for IIT-JEE is the children of government employees, but they had a much lower success rate.

    Current Examination Format
    The present pattern that has been followed since 2006 consists of two objective type tests each containing maths, physics and chemistry sections. The syllabus of the examination is primarily based on topics covered by the CBSE Board Examination (AISSCE) and the ISC Board Examination. The pattern of questions in JEE is generally variable so as to minimize the chance of students getting selected by cramming up the probable questions. As it is objective type questions, Optical mark recognition answer sheets has been in use since 2006. In previous years, there were tests for maths, physics and chemistry, each of two hours' duration, which contained both subjective and objective Questions. The current pattern is adopted so as to reduce the stress to students.

    Given the importance attached to the JEE by students all across India, the IITs follow a rigorous procedure when organizing the exam every year. The exam is set by the JEE Committee (comprising of a group of faculty members drawn from the admitting colleges) under the tightest security. Multiple sets of question papers are designed and the set which is to actually be used on the day of the exam is known to only about five individuals. In the past, the JEE has been noted for originality in its questions.

    All India Engineering Entrance Examination

    All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) is an exam organized by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India. Initiated in the year 2002, this national level competitive test is for admission to several under-graduate engineering and architecture courses in institutes that accept the AIEEE score, including 20 renowned National Institutes of Technology’s (NITs).The examination is held in the last Sunday of April and results are announced during the end of May. Candidates get ranking on an all-India basis and also according to their position in state. Thus, they have an All India Rank (AIR) as well as a state rank (SR).

    Students applying for B.Arch. are tested in mathematics and an aptitude test. Students applying for B.Tech./B.E. are tested in physics, mathematics and chemistry. The duration of the test is 3 hours but maximum marks and the number of questions may vary every year. Equal weightage is given to all the three sections.

    Rule of Central Counselling Board for AIEEE 2010
    As declared by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), 50% of the seats in NIT’s will be filled from AIEEE eligible candidates of States where the NIT’s are located and remaining 50% seats will be filled on an All India Merit basis.

    The MHRD also plans to establish new NIT’s in states that do not have any as of now. In case NIT’s are not built by the time admission process for AIEEE 2010 starts, then seats will be made available for eligible students of such States/UTs that do not have any NIT, so as to keep the number of seats for such States/UTs at the level of 2007, after making necessary adjustment for the number of seats filled by eligible candidates of these States/UTs.

    Future
    Showing Faith in organisational capability and technical infrastructure of the NIT system, the MHRD has decided to entrust the task of conducting the AIEEE to NIT’s themselves starting from 2008-09 session itself.

    Earlier, the counselling process was dealt by a Central Counselling Board (CCB) based at New Delhi. The important decision to this effect was taken by the MHRD on the advice of the Directors of NIT’s meeting who had unanimously advocated for transferring of the responsibility for CCB of AIEEE counselling to NITs.

    Every year director of a NIT will be the chairman of the CCB along with the selected directors of other institutes in the board of counselling.

    The NITs will conduct the counselling and take the responsibility of setting question papers as well from the year 2010. Similar to the conduct of the IIT-JEE and counselling by one of the six IITs in the country every year on a rotational basis, one among the 20 NIT’s in the country would be made a nodal agency for the conduct of AIEEE every year.
