IIT Bombay, established by an Act of Parliament, was set up in 1958, at Powai, a northern suburb of Mumbai. Today the Institute is recognized as one of the centers of academic excellence in India. Over the years, there has been dynamic progress at IIT Bombay in all academic and research activities, and a parallel improvement in facilities and infrastructure, to keep it on par with the finest institutions in the world. Infrastructure
IIT Bombay boasts of state-of-the-art instructional facilities with the lecture halls and auditoriums of the departments being equipped with latest technology audio visual aids. In its pursuit of enhancing the quality of education in the institutions across the country, lectures conducted at IIT Bombay are telecast at several institutes. Around 100 institutes have a subscription to these courses through Center for Distance Engineering Education Programme (CDEEP). Students can also access these lectures over the intranet accessible to them in the departments as well as hostels.

Library
IIT Bombay has identified its potential to be a creator of new knowledge in various domains of technology and sciences. To aid this, the Central Library of IIT Bombay conducts the task of acquisition and dissemination of knowledge in several forms. The library has a total collection of 405363 books and has subscribed to above 1400 print journals. 

Research Facilities: The departments of IIT Bombay offers cutting edge research facilities to its students to carry out research projects as a part of their academics. The institute conducts joint research collaborations with a number of reputed industrial organizations like ONGC, Applied Materials, Yahoo! etc. 

Hostel Facilities:
IIT Bombay has a total of 13 hostels for students. Each hostel is an independent entity with its own mess facilities, recreational areas, etc. Students can also opt to make their own arrangement for accommodation outside the campus. 

Students Gymkhana:
Student activities are organized through the Students Gymkhana and are held mainly at the Students Activities Centre. There are excellent facilities for sports which include a swimming pool, tennis, badminton and squash courts, and vast playgrounds for field games.

Wildlife camps and trekking are popular off-campus activities at IIT Bombay. different clubs of the gymkhana encourage individual talents like painting, modeling, music, photography, etc.   The facilities for sports are complimented by the cultural activities on campus. There are cultural and social clubs, film clubs, classical music societies, debating and drama clubs and a hobbies club.   There are also a few campus publications by the students. "Aksh" (in Hindi), "Technik" (in English), "Tantra" (in Marathi) and "On the move" are magazines containing students views and comments on different aspects of campus life. "Pragati" is a multilingual annual publication of Students' Gymkhana. 

How to reach IIT Bombay
IIT Bombay is located at Powai, which is an eastern suburb in the North-Eastern part of Mumbai. Mumbai is in the form of a long narrow island, almost a peninsula, thrusting south wards into the Arabian Sea. 

From the airport: If you are coming from the domestic (40-60 min travel time) or international terminal (10-20 minutes travel time) of the airport, you can get pre-paid taxis or auto rickshaws to IIT Bombay. 

 Central Railway: If you are coming on the central railway line (e.g. Kalyan, Thane, Kurla, Dadar, VT) you can take a local train and get down at Kanjur Marg (West) station or Vikhroli (West) station which are the nearest stations to IITB and take a bus (there are many buses to IIT) or auto rickshaw to IIT (main gate). 

 Western Railway: If you are coming on the western railway line (e.g. Borivali, Andheri, Bombay Central, or Churchgate), it is better to get off at Dadar station and change to the central railway line and take a local train to Kanjur Marg (West) station or Vikhroli (West) station and then take a bus (there are several buses to IIT) or auto rickshaw to IIT (main gate).
